“Overcome”里Martina(女声)的声音非常庸懒性感,整个作品就象在一个阴冷的下午一个女孩坐在床边上对男孩的调侃和不屑的揶揄。
“Ponderosa”似乎描写了Tricky当时的内心紧张厌恶之情,对许多压力和势力感到很厌恶但又相当无奈,所以只能借酒精和香烟来麻人比黄花瘦醉自己,其中在Martina唱完第二段的时候,有一段是Tricky的“......Uhh......”的叹词,如果你仔细辨认的话,可以清晰地感受到吸烟和吐烟的鼻息以及一声喝饱酒后的打嗝声,以及之后的歌词:“I drink till I'm drunk/And I smoke till I'm senseless.”都暗示着那个时候1994年的Tricky的心情是多么得郁闷和无奈。虽然在作品中采用了大量清脆动听的打击乐器融合在鼓机中,但情绪是郁闷而无处宣泄的。而这样的情绪下写出的歌词和Martina冷漠颓败随意的唱腔结合在一起就相当地富有感染力了。
“Black Steel”里叙述了一个男孩子和自己的哥哥一样收到了一个来自服兵役的通知信件,之后他极其讨厌去当兵,但又不得不去的厌恶又无奈的心情。作品中充斥了大量有力的真鼓敲击声,整个作品更象一个传统摇滚乐歌曲。
“Hell is Round The Corner”中前段的节奏象极了Portishead的作品风格,而Tricky的充满病态自言自语Rap配合着老唱片的杂音,加上缓慢的节拍这一切都成为了Tricky的作品的典型标志。
“Pumpkin Pumpkin”中Tricky邀请到了Alison Goldfrapp,不得不承认在这个最早的合作中,Alison Goldfrapp的声音确实相当阴冷的,而这首作品也帮助Goldfrapp建立了一定的知名度,为她后来自己制作专集带来了可能性。
真正为Tricky带来名气并且“成为当年英国最热的舞曲之一”的是“Aftermath”这个长达7分多的作品,其音乐元素中包含了TripHop最基本的几个元素:足够低沉缓慢的鼓机节拍,老唱片的杂音,来自电影中的对白采样,以及漫不经心的女声Vocal和Tricky自己革新的低沉沙哑的Rap,这一切造就出一个全新的黑暗阴冷幽闭的世界。
“Abbaon Fat Tracks”和其后的“Brand New You're Retro”的歌词更象Tricky潜在的一个性压抑和性幻想情绪的真实表达,而做为目前处境相似的男性也许更能理解当时同样20岁的Trick的性压抑的痛苦和无奈。
“Suffocated Love”歌词有些晦涩,想是一对情侣在讨论性和爱的关系?
“You Don't”中的那个女声我很不喜欢。
“Strugglin”拼贴了相当多的采样,并且歌词极尽描写了许多无意识的迷离意境,配合着许多重复单调的采样以营造潮湿阴冷的氛围,是整个专集中相当实验的一个作品。
“Feed Me”中在1分21之后的一段紧凑的鼓机很是好听。

其实tricky是massive attack的正宗血统出生。如果你翻开massive attack 91年那张号称trip hop开山之作的《blue line》专辑的内页还可以见到他略显稚嫩的模样。这个当年在massive attack中规规矩矩担任raper的黑人小伙儿,谁会料到他会成长为那个后来几乎把trip hop导向毁灭的极端的音乐狂魔?
95年的《Maxinquaye》是tricky的第一张个人专辑。当时tricky刚脱离了massive attack出来,是在心情郁闷不忿(众所周知tricky同massive attack是在非常不友好的局面下分开的)的情况下推出的作品。在商业上他急于证明自己的卖座不需倚靠massive attack的号召力同样可以独当一面,在音乐性上可说是走比较流行化格调化路线,基本延续着massive attack所引领的那一路风格(甚至于“overcome”一曲同massive attak的“karmacoma”之间竟透出一丝的微妙呵)。性感时尚的节奏合着迷幻粘稠的女声,低调、颓伤却不失优雅华丽,就是那后来臭名昭著的病态念白此时也带着不温不火的hop味儿。所以,这个时期的tricky还只是一个向唱片工业妥协而且多少受不必要的个人情绪引响的tricky,风格并未成熟。虽然不无沉滞、疏离,但更多的是华丽甚或恬美的颓废,基本谈不上阴暗、梦魇。
但话说回来,《Maxinquaye》商业归商业,却异常的动听,这点从围绕这张唱片就发行了6张上榜单曲EP的成绩就可窥知。要知道这可是其它的两位trip hop巨头massive attack和portishead都无法达到的成绩呀,及后也再没有一支纯trip hop乐队达到过这样的颠峰。所以可说,《Maxinquaye》时期的tricky是还未成型的tricky但却是最风光的tricky。
但如果继续这样下去的话,tricky也就不称其为tricky了。于是,在一举成名的大好形式下,这个古怪的家伙却在面对掌声与欢呼声的舞台上猛一转身,掉头而去,向着当初离开massive attack时所誓言的目标进发,试图挑战trip hop最孤寂自闭的绝望地带,那是怎样的一个阴暗而孤独的世界啊!
96年,《pro-millennium tension》在一片惊呼声中喷薄而出。极端的实验色彩和邪有暗香盈袖恶得让人惊惧的异端气质一下子就将tricky推到了trip hop乃至整个电子乐的悬崖边上。各种古怪肮脏的电声采样,欲偈慌乱的女声再加上tricky那酸性病态的诅咒式叨念,所有华丽甜美的伪装皮面被彻底剥去,骨子里那个阴沉邪异的恶魔面目彰显。当然商业成绩上就肯定是不复风光的了。奇怪的是当年的英国评论界却异常的追新捧异,以致tricky这张专辑竟然被好几个音乐杂志年选为十大之一,并且他本人也得到年度男歌手的称号。《pro-millennium tension》成为他本人至今成就最高也最受好评的一张专辑,天皇之名不胫而走。
当然,评论界对《pro-millennium tension》的贸然接受很快便自尝苦果,那就是98年《angels with dirty faces》的推出。这张专辑在《pro-millennium tension》的极度邪有暗香盈袖恶上再变本加厉地铺上一派暗无天日的黑色氛围,各种音乐元素无论主流地下还是实验异端的都被tricky用他黑暗得深不见底的音乐黑洞强行收容。drumn' bass就自是不用说了,它本就是trip hop的血亲,而big beat和jungle的急速漩流使得部分曲目愈显剑拔弩张。但最意外的是《angels with dirty faces》里居然还尝试性加入了dark wave与gothic元素,舞台剧式惊栗和声与真声敲打乐器的硬性介入简直就是给本已受尽精神摧残的听者再蒙上一层晦暗无光的眼罩。在黑暗中迷失,正是此时的写照。tricky走火入魔了,评论界恶狠狠地疾呼,为他们起初对这个恶魔的轻率包容后悔不迭。而gothic hop这样的新名词竟被一些冲动者用来形容tricky的这种新奇诡异的杂交电子乐,他们甚至试图拒绝承认tricky所作出的是trip hop音乐。不过,我个人认为还好tricky并未因此被划出trip hop这乐派。毕竟gothic也好,阴暗浪潮也好,那只是tricky用来修饰trip hop的音乐元素,在核心部分他还是电子化而且着迷于节奏实验的,离gothic、 wave的神秘中古异教色彩还是有着相当距离。不过说到不余遗力地拓宽trip hop这种音乐的丰富与包容性上tricky绝对是最前沿的斗士,因此才会有trip hop天皇之称。

开篇的“Tattoo”布满了悬疑片的低回压抑的氛围,其中在作品中段和末尾都有一整段的苍白扭曲的鼓机和类似信号频率的杂音,听来相当阴冷。“Poems”开头的缓慢得几乎要使人昏昏欲睡的鼓机是唯一让我有眼前一亮的感觉,同样地“Together Now”中,唯一可以值得一听的也就是鼓机结合打击乐器制造出的清脆声响了,而其旋律和泡泡糖歌曲没什么区别。 也许是和bjork合作的缘故,“keep your mouth shut”中用到的采样实验相对就多了一些:一开始的采样仿佛是走进了一个发电厂里,到处回响着机器噪音和自身运转的嗡嗡声,本来绵长沉重的鼓机也被处理成非常短的Loop,而最精彩的是最后结尾的10秒的采样,做恐怖片的配乐非常适合。“Make a Change”中把鼓机的节拍最末尾拖长并且加重的玩法如果放到现在的许多乐队的话早已经是玩滥了的过时玩意,但也许之前很少有人尝试这么玩法(除了DJ Cam等),所以在当时1996年还算比较新鲜的玩法,但我很不喜欢Moyet的唱腔,那种blues,Soul的唱法和嗓音,主观偏见吧。
整张唱片略显平淡,除去和Bjork合作的两首之外,其他的都有些平淡乏味。

一直以为tricky是最最顽固的TRIP HOP元老了。然而上张专辑《JUXTAPOSE》的明亮音色多少让人对他的顽固产生怀疑,怀疑他对trip hop阴暗低迷情调的忠诚度?怀疑他是否已逃离一向抵死坚守的trip hop糜烂腐朽的中心地带?
所以,作为新千年的首张trip hop天碟的《BLOWBACK》是否如其名一样是一次真正而漂亮的反戈一击就备受期待了。
这次的新专辑居然大玩后现代电子乐的融合与拼贴,几乎所有新锐的可用的电子元素都被这个家伙信手捻来的贴上了“tricky”的独家标签,呵呵!而且居然做得如此的熨贴人心啊,听得我摇头晃脑的。
在首曲“excess”里还是标准的tricky式黑暗低迷trip hop之声,然而间中的某女子的类尖叫声还是带来少许不同。
第二曲“evolution revolution love”中键盘和鼓居然还制造出类似雷鬼乐的架构,而那个拉美派系的男声念叨和丝丝吉他的拨弦又是如此鬼马,再加上tricky病态炎炎的泥泞式招牌念唱(本人反感“说唱”,为示区别,故用“念唱”),呵呵!变化是如此明显。
那个饶舌的拉美男声在第三首“over me”中还和一个女声做了一次性感的对话,倒是tricky一贯的荒淫之态。
第四首“girls”有着industrial rock式吉他riff的底架,已是tricky绝无仅有的一次了,但如此钟爱玩新花样的tricky又怎满足于让其唱独台?于是又替它铺上electronic的后现代电气网络,当然,最不可或缺的还是tricky那病入膏肓的呢喃,邪气之作!
如果在第五首“you don't wanna”中你听到了80年代韵律操乐队的键盘声,在第六首“#1 da woman”中出现了上世纪的俱乐部泡泡糖舞曲,在第七首“your name”中有北欧乐派的甜美吉他乐声出现,你是哑然无语还是会心一笑?当然你不用担心,在这些明亮的点缀后面仍是tricky那渗入骨髓的昏天黑地,只要你细听“your name”的吉他后那郁闷沉重的鼓机,吉他音色的酸性变异以及tricky那恋童癖般如影随形的和声。
然后的第八首“diss never”中则将真正gothic式诡异氛围音效溶入纯正的tricky式trip hop节奏及恹恹其烦的神经念唱中,结尾时那几声凸显空灵的鼓声是tricky的慎迷心思与事无巨细。
第九首“bury the evidence”有一个类似于吵架的开头,在锣鼓铿锵中是咄咄逼人的男声,及后的重型吉他riff和惊兆式键盘是否tricky向manson的“致敬”?
当然,真正的致敬来自于第十首“something in the way”,比cobain更低沉的歌特化男声唱得来让人实在难以抗拒,部落式的鼓声和诡异的和声同原曲简直大相廷径。但同样的绝望和痛苦仍然让人闻之黯然!我们那早经尘封的怀念本已随上个世纪的gerunge一同埋没,今夜在这个音乐风格同cobain有着天壤之别的tricky的悼念(叨念?)声中,竟如天堂之门无意打开,那绝望痛苦的魂灵再度御风而来一般,他对我们述说着那里更甚的不幸,是谁说的?“天堂是地狱的倒影”。
在过渡式的第十一首“five days”的标准trip hop之声和第十二首“give it to'EM”刀指剑戳的急流式抢白后,是这张专辑的扛顶之作:“a song for YUKIKIO”
第十三首“a song for YUKIKIO”。不说tricky在这首曲子里邀来日本女声木然的对白,和那简约化钢琴声的环绕低徊是怎样的新意连连。其实最让我欣慰的是,这首动用了与trip hop在乐风以及人文上最不沾边的东方元素(哪怕只是摘要式的)的乐曲,居然是全碟里最具trip hop神韵的一首。极为沉闷窒重的鼓声和着tricky那邪气、木然、朽烂的念白,这才是我们最为熟悉最为迷恋的那个tricky,trip hop的魂灵,阴暗国度的君主,在对乱花入眼的新世纪乐风巡视一周后,他偕同新的伙伴--一朵东洋之花,缓缓而来,于这阴暗的国土上,再度君临天下。
总所周知,早在上个世纪的最后一年,关于trip hop走到头的传言就已困扰着整个trip hop的圣地“bristol”。而这直接导致了massive attake的解散、portishead的沉寂至今、tricky的出走纽约以及上张专辑的水土不服。至此,trip hop阵营的“铁三角”已形同虚设,而后起之辈又实在无能。于是,trip hop迷们只得在低迷失落的心情下弃旧迎新,真正的trip hop着步入21世纪。
然而在新世纪的第一年,第一声战鼓由号称trip hop之王的tricky再度擂响,在不拘一格的跳出久有乐风同众多新旧乐派的元素杂交与拼贴融合后,终于,诞下了《BLOWBACK》这个名副其实的“怪胎”。tricky,我们的阴暗之王,是寻觅到救trip hop于病入膏肓的良药?还是实验出使trip hop涅盘重生的妙方?
在上张略显明亮而备受争议的专辑《JUXTAPOSE》中,tricky同我们开了一个有关“从黑暗中逃离的,必将死于光明”的玩笑,而这张新专辑《BLOWBACK》的反戈一击毫无疑问是这位trip hop君主的复辟诏告:
